IIT students wins Games, Innovation and World Citizenship categories at Imagine Cup Sri Lanka 2015 finals with seven teams bagging a record breaking six awards
IIT bags a total of 13 awards in three consecutive years at the Imagine Cup Sri Lanka finals and up to date remains the only Sri Lankan team to win an award at the World Finals
IIT breaks its own record for highest number of awards won by a single education institution
For the third consecutive year, students from the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT Campus), a subsidiary of the Informatics Group, emerged victors at the Imagine Cup Sri Lanka 2015 finals sponsored by Microsoft.
Continuing the winning streak at national and international competitions, this year’s Imagine Cup Sri Lanka final which was held at the DHPL Auditorium in Colombo on April 22, witnessed for the first time a single education institution bagging six awards.
Seven teams representing IIT Campus bagged the six awards which included the first place under the Games, Innovation and World Citizenship categories by defeating teams representing many prominent state universities and private higher education institutions that were selected for the finals.
In the light of this latest victory, IIT Campus has set a new Imagine Cup Sri Lanka record by bagging the highest number of awards since the competitions inception in 2005. Up to date IIT Campus has won a total of 13 awards at Imagine Cup Sri Lanka and is the only Sri Lankan team to win an award at the Imagine Cup World Finals.
The Imagine Cup 2015 Sri Lanka finals consisted of 19 teams that were selected out of nearly 98 participants. Amongst the 19 finalist, 10 teams comprised of students representing IIT Campus.
The winner for the Gamming category for Imagine Cup Sri Lanka 2015 was team DIMENSION-X SHOOTERS which comprised of Sameendra Chaturanga, Suharsha Fonseka, Hansamali Wijayatilake and Shenal Mendis from the IIT Campus.
The Innovation category was dominated by three teams from the IIT Campus that emerged winners, first runner-up and second runner-up. Team DRUTA which included Ishan Sirimanne, Ishan Jayasekara, Keshan Withanage and Raveen Wijethilake were the winners of the Innovation category.
The first runner-up in the Innovation category went to Firebird Sniff It, while team Shmoovi Equinox was adjudicated as the second runner-up.
The World Citizenship category was also dominated by IIT with team Firebird Twig-Gab that included Mohamad Shehan, Milinda Jayalath, Charitha Perera and Krishnakripa Jeyakumar taking the first place. Team TechVision Sober Companion and Team Top Hills that was representing the IIT Campus had a tie as they were both judged as the second runner-up.
Last year five teams representing IIT Campus went on to win five awards in the Imagine Cup Sri Lanka finals in the Games, Innovation and World Citizenship categories, which was the highest number of awards won by a single institute during that time. In 2013, the IIT Campus team that won the Imagine Cup Sri Lanka finals emerged as the first and only Sri Lankan team to win an award at the Imagine Cup World finals which was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Previously, IIT has won many accolades in several other national and international competitions such National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA), Google Summer of Code and e-Swabhimani. During the 25 years of excellence, IIT has produced over 3000 graduates who are holding prestigious positions across the globe. Currently, IIT is offering internal undergraduate and post-graduate degree programmes in Information Communication Technology and Business from the University of Westminster.
