Continuing the winning streak at national and international competitions, this year too, Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) was victorious once again at the 2014 Microsoft Imagine Cup competition. It was a much anticipated event, eagerly awaited by the enthusiastic team of students and a dedicated set of academic staff who mentored them.
For the past decade, Microsoft’s Imagine Cup has been the world’s most prestigious and Sri Lanka’s premier student technology competition. The contest has given student technologists and aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to win big and gain credibility by developing the next big Windows app or game.
The Microsoft Imagine Cup award ceremony was held on Friday 25 April, 2014 at the Engineering Faculty, University of Peradeniya, Kandy, with 14 teams from state universities and other institutes of higher education participating. IIT ensured that a strong contingent was sent for this contest. It consisted of five teams that participated in the ‘World Citizenship’, ‘Innovation’ and ‘Games’ categories. All five teams went on to win awards, bringing credit to IIT, the institute that nurtured their talents.
The achievement of all five teams at this prestigious competition is very heartening and a great reward for all who contributed to their success. The team Silver Chasers comprising of Ershadi Sayuri Jayatilaka, Sanduni Jayasooriya, Sachith Ushan and Shamin Rasoja Goonetilaka were the winner of the ‘World Citizenship’ category for project “Find Me” which is a child protection system for tracking misplaced children.
The team Firebird comprising Mohamed Shehan and Tharaka De Alwis who won the ‘Innovation’ category award for the project ‘Dream Mode’, which is a device to help people to dream what they desire as well as being a preventive for insomnia. Both teams were mentored by Ms Dinithi Nallaperuma. These two teams will proceed to Seattle, Washington for the World Microsoft Imagine Cup finals to be held later this year, where they will showcase their ground breaking innovations using Microsoft Technologies and devices.
The team Aurora comprising of Ashan Dhananjaya Kumara, Chamitha Ramal Narawita, Nilupul Lalithya Liyanage and Rehani Fernando were placed 1st Runner Up in the ‘Games’ category. The team Binary Square comprising of Praveen Rajapathiranage, Noel Yahan, Padmaka Wijayagoonawardena and Shamal Perera were placed 2nd Runner Up in the ‘Games’ category. Finally, the team E-Logic comprising of Udeshi Premasundara, Sith Indunil Withana, Keshan Nageswaran and Jithmi Perera were placed 2nd Runner Up in the ‘World Citizenship’ category.
It is a significant and an exceptional feat for IIT to achieve this success amidst several rounds of judging and stiff competition from other stakeholders. It only goes to confirm the very high academic standards being maintained at IIT since its inception in 1990. This is not the first occasion IIT has achieved such high accolades. IIT won Gold for three consecutive years at the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) conducted by the British Computer Society.
